The Infatuated Jenneration

Cleopatra, Charlie Chaplain, Princess Diana, Madonna, Paris Hilton, Kendall and Kylie Jenner. Each of these individuals are from varying periods in history, but what they have in common is that they were all idolized by an infatuated group of people. This obsession with celebrities is not new to our generation or our time. This is a phenomenon that has been prevalent for centuries. Those “it” people have come and gone and will continue to come and go and be replaced with new people whom society will become infatuated with. These days, technology has just made it easier to stalk people, and some individuals, such as the Jenners/Kardashians make a living off of willingly putting their private lives out for public consumption and being those people. Kendell is a supermodel who has dominated to runway and has established herself as an icon with her street style and her ability to make even the most basic outfit look trendy. Kylie Jenner is the awkward teen transformed into a beauty icon and business entrepreneur. Due to this ease of access to people’s lives through social media – Facebook, Instagram, snapchat, twitter, people have become more and more obsessive about following their every move. Kylie makes it so easy with her minute by minute snapchat story updates for her millions of followers. Young girls hate her but secretly want to be her with their Kylie lip kits and nonchalant Kylie pose inspired Instagram posts.

There is a term for this obsession called “Celebrity Worship Syndrome” or CWS for short. It is an obsessive disorder in which a person becomes overly involved with the details of a celebrities personal life. Kylie is on her way to becoming a millennial icon. One reason everyone wants to be like Kendall and Kylie Jenner is because they are their age and while most average people at that age are struggling to go to school and make payments, she gets a new luxury car every year and has multiple luxury mansions living a glamorous life. It gives people a way to make fun of their extravagance and ridiculousness, sometimes out of jealousy, and for a minute forget about all their struggles in life to pass judgements on the lives of others.
